WATCH: When Queen Elizabeth dropped the puck at a Canucks game (Oct. 6, 2002)

Article begins below

Today, we got the surprising news that Queen Elizabeth II of England has passed away at the age of 96.

We look back on the time she dropped the ceremonial puck at an exhibition game between the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks back on October 6, 2002.

At the time, she was 76-years-old and had not attended a hockey game since 1951 prior to this match.

She even stuck around the watch the entire first-period of the game.

The video is down below.

In the video, you can see the queen, alongside Wayne Gretzky, drop the puck prior to the start of the Exhibition match.

The Queen was in Vancouver with her husband, Prince Philip, as part of a 12-day Golden Jubilee tour of Canada, celebrating the 50th anniversary of her rule.

The Canucks won the game 3-2 after two goals from Fedor Fedorov and one from Ed Jovanovski.

May the Queen rest in peace.
