The 2022 Winter Classic could be the coldest game in NHL history

Updated: Jan 2, 2022

The 13th annual Winter Classic happens on Saturday afternoon at Target Field in Minneapolis, MN.

Saturday in Minneapolis calls for potential lows of -28 'C (-19 'F). These forecasts are constantly changing, so the NHL will continue to monitor, but as of right now the game is set to be played.

There also will be a 35% chance of snow throughout the day.

Despite Minnesota being a frozen wasteland on Saturday, a sell-out crowd of 38,000 fans are expected to be in attendance for the game. Potentially matching the record-low attendance (38,112) set at the 2010 Winter Classic between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins played at Fenway Park.

"It's obviously a great experience," Kaprizov said Tuesday. "Overall, it's a great atmosphere. It's super special for the team, the fans, the players."

"Depends though. When it's really cold, it's obviously very tough. But overall, it's a great, fun experience and a lot of fun for everyone."

The Minnesota Wild throw it back to the 1930's with their faux-back uniforms. The jersey is a blend of former teams to play in the state of Minnesota. The Minneapolis Millers, and the St. Paul Saints.

The St. Louis Blues are rocking their 1967-68 expansion white uniforms as you can see below.

The Winter Classic between Minnesota and St. Louis was initially postponed in 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The coldest game of hockey in NHL history was at the 2003 Heritage Classic between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens when temperatures reached -17 'C (0 'F).
