Philadelphia Flyers fire head coach Alain Vigneault, assistant Therrien

Updated: Jan 8, 2022

Following a string of firings that have rocked the Hockey world, Alain Vigneault is the latest to get canned.

The Flyers lost their eighth consecutive game on Sunday when the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated them 7-1. In this eight game span, they have been outscored 36-13. This is the first time the Flyers have lost more than five games in-a-row under Alain Vigneault.

Here's an official statement from the Philadelphia Flyers organization following the termination of their head coach & assistant coach.

Assistant coach Michel Therrien has also been fired by the Flyers while assistant Mike Yeo will takeover as head coach on an interim basis.

Vigneault was in his third season of a five-year, $25M contract which was initially signed in April of 2019.

In 2019-20, Vigneault finished as the runner up for the Jack Adams trophy (Coach Of The Year) when the Flyers went within one win of the Eastern Conference Final. However, the Flyers missed the playoffs last season while allowing a league-high 3.52 Goals-per-game.
