The struggling Montreal Canadiens have just assigned (F) Cole Caufield to the AHL's Laval Rocket. Forward Michael Pezzetta has been recalled to the Canadiens' line up.
Caufield, who has currently 1 point (0 Goals, 1 Assist) in 10 games with Montreal, has not been living up to his expectations early in his rookie campaign. He came in to this season as the Calder trophy favorite after a 5 points (4 Goals, 1 Assist) in 10 games campaign in the shortened 2020-21 season.
In the 2020-21 playoffs, Caufield excelled with 12 points (4 Goals, 8 Assists) in 20 games amid Montreal's Stanley cup final run, which saw them losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 5 games.
Caufield was drafted 15th overall in the 2019 NHL draft. In a star studded draft year that saw teams drafting young stars such as Jack Hughes, Vasily Podkolzin, Trevor Zegras and Colorado's young defensive sensation Bowen Byram.
Sending Caufield down may be the right move, as plenty of players in the 2019 NHL draft required additional time in the AHL before becoming regulars in their respecting teams line up.
Pezzetta has 6 points (3 Goals, 3 Assists) in 8 games with Laval so far this season.
