It is not unusual for players to share high praise for each other prior to the start of a highly anticipated season. And rookie Matthew Knies had just that for Auston Matthews during an interview today at Upper Deck's rookie showcase today (September 5, 2023).
When asked about playing with teammate Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies had some high praise for the 25-year-old.
“Pretty damn good. He’s not just the best goal scorer in the NHL but he plays defense too. He’s kind of the best overall player [in the NHL] in my eyes.”
Matthew Knies has suited up for just three regular-season games with the Maple Leafs last season, while appearing in seven playoff games. The 20-year-old was selected 57th overall in the 2021 NHL draft.
One could argue that while Auston Matthews is one of the best goal scorers in the league, Connor McDavid is currently the better all-around player.
Still, you can't argue that Matthews has been one of the best players in the league in recent years. Scoring an unthinkable 299 goals in 481 games since joining the league in 2016-17.
