For the first time in his career, Ovechkin failed to record this important stat in consecutive games

Arguably the greatest goal scorer of all time, Ovechkin has been off to a bumpy start to his 2023-24 campaign.

He recorded no goals and one assist through 3 games, but remained off the score sheet for an important statistic in consecutive games. Something that has never happened to Ovechkin in his career.

Can't score if you don't shoot

The Washington Capitals sniper was held shotless during a 6-1 defeat to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday night. His 1,350th career game to be precise.

He was also held shotless on Monday nights 3-2 shootout victory to the Calgary Flames.

Which means this is the first time in his 19-year career that Alex Ovechkin has gone consecutive games without a shot on goal.

Ovechkin has only been held without a shot 19 times since entering the league in 2005-06, and has led the league in the statistic 11 times.

The 38-year-old also started last season slow, recording no goals through three games. However, he finished the season with 42 goals and moved into second-place on the all-time goals list.

Luckily for Ovechkin, the season is still young and there will be plenty more opportunities to get pucks on the net.

Will Ovechkin surpass Gretzky in All-Time goals?
