Canucks officially hit rock bottom, set NHL record for most blown leads

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

The Canucks have officially hit rock-bottom in an NHL season full of surprises.

They had a 3-0 lead over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night, and ultimately blew it with a 5-4 loss. How often do you see this?

Well, for the 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks, blowing three goal leads is a regular feat. In fact, this has now happened 8 times in the first 40 games of the season for the team. Surpassing the previous record (7) held by the 2018-19 New York Islanders, 1985-86 New Jersey Devils and the 2005-06 New York Islanders.

Now, as we pass the halfway mark in this absurd NHL season, the Canucks are officially in no-man's land sitting 26th in the standings.

The playoff dream is officially dead and team tank is on. Would the Canucks be able to hold their spot in the bottom-7 and draft Connor Bedard? It's unlikely. We've seen too many late season surges from this Canucks team, which has now qualified for the playoffs just once in the past seven years.

Unfortunately for this Canucks team and fanbase which has been so desperate to return to the playoffs, we're still a few pieces away from that dream becoming a reality.
